Meet Kevin

Proven Leadership, Colorado Values

You may know me from my work on the Douglas County School Board or South Metro Fire Rescue—or maybe from a simple conversation on your doorstep. But before all that, I was just a kid from Hong Kong with a big heart and a thick accent.

My parents couldn't read or write, but they raised me to value hard work and integrity. When I arrived in America, I didn't speak much English—but I spoke the language of perseverance. I've been speaking it ever since.

In 2017, I was elected to the Douglas County School Board. We hadn't passed a school bond in over a decade. But in 2018, we passed a $250 million bond and mill levy override that brought new schools, better tools, and renewed trust.

Later, I joined the South Metro Fire Rescue board—where I helped oversee a $200 million budget to support over 570,000 residents. I've never worn the uniform, but I've always had their back.

But service is more than numbers. It's about people. It's about how we show up—especially when it's hard.

At a school board forum, someone said I didn't belong—because of how I speak. That moment hurt. But I didn't shout. I didn't quit. I filed a report, took a breath—and kept serving. Because leadership isn't about how you sound. It's about how you serve.

Last year, when a respected Japanese American physician was wrongly accused of bringing communism into a local campaign,

I stood up. We gathered 1,200 signatures, with mayors, senators, and neighbors standing shoulder to shoulder. Because injustice doesn't scare me—silence does.

That's why I'm running for Colorado State Senate.

I believe in real solutions—smart growth, excellent education, and care that honors our seniors. I want to represent those who've been told they're not enough. Because I've been there.

The Teacher Conference That Changed Everything

I’ll never forget the parent–teacher conference that changed everything for me. My daughter’s teacher—an extraordinary educator shaping young minds—was spending her own grocery money on classroom supplies. Someone needs to fight for these kids, I thought. That’s why I ran for the Douglas County School Board—not for a title, but as a parent who believed our teachers deserved better. In my four years on the board, we secured an additional $40 million annually to raise teacher pay, expanded Career and Technical Education programs, and passed a $250 million bond to repair our aging schools. Every dollar went where it belonged—to our teachers and students.

When Emergencies Don't Care About Politics

Starting my computer consulting business from a spare bedroom taught me what every entrepreneur knows—you're responsible not just for your own family, but for every employee's family too. Every decision matters. Every dollar counts. That same accountability drove me to serve on the South Metro Fire Rescue Board. When someone calls 911 in Douglas County, they don't care about your party affiliation—they need help fast. That's what I've learned helping oversee a $200 million budget protecting over 571,000 residents. Results matter more than rhetoric.

Kevin & Shirley, first year of marriage

From Hong Kong to Main Street

The scared young adult who came to the U.S. completely alone could never have imagined serving his adopted community in elected office. But that’s the magic of America—the land of opportunity—and of Douglas County in particular.

Neighbors taught me how Colorado works. Co-workers helped me with English. Employers gave me chances to be part of teams.

For the past 20 years, I’ve built my IT consulting and car wash businesses here, creating dozens of jobs. I’ve specialized in data science, cybersecurity and environmental issues—expertise that’s more important than ever as Colorado faces modern digital threats, rapid growth of artificial intelligence, and the challenges of a changing climate.

The Colorado I'm Fighting For

For Working Families
Good-paying jobs shouldn't be a luxury. I support policies that help small businesses grow and create the kind of careers that let young adults, teachers, firefighters, and essential workers actually live in the communities they serve. Having met payroll for 25 years, I understand what it takes to build an economy that works for everyone.

For Our Children
Every classroom should be fully funded, every teacher fairly paid. Our kids compete in a global economy—they deserve world-class schools that prepare them to lead Colorado's future. My tireless effort to ensure our local taxpayers to increase school funding in twelve years proves I'll fight for every dollar our students deserve.

For Smart Growth

We can grow responsibly while protecting what makes Douglas County special. That means safeguarding our water resources, strengthening emergency services, and ensuring development serves our communities, not just developers. My fire board experience gives me unique insight into how growth affects public safety and infrastructure.

For Our Seniors

After a lifetime of building Colorado, our seniors deserve to age with dignity and independence. That means accessible healthcare, protection from fraud, and policies that honor their contributions. As someone who watched my parents sacrifice everything for their children's future, I understand the importance of intergenerational care.

Beyond Politics

Here's what I believe: Whether you're a Republican, Democrat, or Independent, we all want the same things—safe neighborhoods, excellent schools, and the chance for our families to thrive.

I've never run in a partisan campaign that attacks opponents or divides our community. Instead, I've spent my career bringing people together to solve problems. That's how we increase education funding. That's how we've kept our emergency services strong. And that's how we'll tackle the challenges ahead together.

Recognition and Results

The night I received the Asian American Hero of Colorado Award, I thought about that scared teenager who stepped off the plane 35 years ago. These recognitions aren't about me—they're proof that in America, with hard work and community support, anyone has a chance to achieve the American dreams.

Recent Recognition:

  • McGuffey Award (2020) - Colorado Association of School Boards

  • Colorado Governor's Minority Business Award (2019)

  • Asian American Hero of Colorado (2018)

My Promise to You

I’m not running to be another politician. I’m running to be the same neighbor I’ve always been—someone who shows up, does the work, and gets results.

At a school board forum, someone once told me I didn’t belong because I didn’t speak English. I could have walked away. Instead, I stayed—and kept serving. That’s the kind of leader I’ll be in the State Senate: facing challenges with grace, working across party lines, and never forgetting that every decision affects real families with real dreams.

In the State Senate, I’ll bring the same approach that helped us pass a historic $250 million school bond and secure $40 million annually for teacher pay: listen with compassion, act with courage, and serve with heart.

An immigrant from Hong Kong with a thick accent could never have imagined he’d one day have the chance to serve Douglas County in the State Senate. But that’s the magic of this place we call home. And I’m running to keep that magic alive—for the teacher who needs affordable housing, the hardworking family worried about putting food on the table, the senior who needs healthcare, and the newcomer with an accent chasing their American dream.

This isn’t just a campaign. It’s our chance to write the next chapter of Colorado’s success story—together.
